But doctors don't get sick

How many times have I heard that. You will too.

People think that doctors have some special inside knowledge or direct telephone line to God.

Somehow we don't get sick. Yeah, right. If anything we get sick twice as often, especially in the winter when everybody wants to find a miracle cure for their common cold. Mums always want their kids checked "just in case". So we doctors at the coal face breathe in millions of viral particles every day. And we get sick. Probably the biggest difference is that most doctors go to work unless they are really sick.

Flu vaccination

I've had my flu shot. So have my wife and kids. Have you?

If you haven't, read this article, giving 10 "dumb ass" reasons not to have a flu shot.

It would be funny if it wasn't true.

Podcasts

I'm a podcast junkie. I admit it. I started with technology podcasts, but recently I discovered one called TWIV - This week in virology. This is interesting, well-presented, clear and understandable for the non-virologist. As a practicing doctor I find it really useful. For medical students and those who want to be doctors this is a definite must.

Go to www.twiv.tv and have a listen.

Email vs phone call

Last year I travelled to Sydney with my wife to attend the funeral of a close friend. We missed our flight due to roadworks, finally managed to get to Sydney, had dinner with friends and fell into bed in our motel at 2:00 in the morning, having set the alarm for 6:00. At 3:00 am my mobile phone rang. Someone from the UK about an order.

Flashback to 2003 - my intern year. I was in the back of an ambulance doing a lights and sirens transfer of a critically ill patient to one of the main hospitals in Brisbane. We'd just put up our last unit of blood and were still ten minutes from the receiving Emergency Department. My phone rings - someone making enquiries about GAMSAT.

Or I may have just broken the bad news to someone that they have terminal cancer when my phone rings.

THAT'S why I ask people to email me first. We really do try to get your orders posted as soon as possible.

A New Hope

Welcome to the new look Ozimed.

We are trying out a new hosting system to try to make our lives easier and provide you with more current information. I hope to be able to post general and specific information about GAMSAT and also about the life of a medical practitioner.
